Makresh municipality
Geographical characteristics
Makresh municipality is situated in north- western Bulgaria. It is 220 km from our capital city – Sofia. The municipality is near Republic Serbia.
Total area of the municipality is 229 m². River Vidbol passes through the municipality.
The relief of the municipality is mountainous and undulating. The climate is marked as moderately continental. Makresh municipality consists of 7 populated areas - Makresh, Rakovitsa, Podgore, Kiryaevo, Tsar Shishmanovo, Topolovitsa and Valchek and they all are villages. There are 22 people working in the administration.

Human resources
Total number of the population till 5.02.2001 is 2530, 1212 men and 1318 women.

Basic infrastructure
The road network of the municipality’s territory is of the fourth grade with total length 95 km. There are no airports and ports. The municipality has well constructed water- supply system. Build- up populated are is 6 km². The territory is not affected of land slides.
There are 1560 acting telephones on the territory of the municipality. The territory is partly covered with mobile network.
The street illumination is about 80%.
Makresh municipality is energy dependent from the power network of the country. There are no acting power stations (in spite of the constructed Thermo Electric Power Station of "Vidahim" PLC).

Education
There are two high schools and 142 students. Children in preschool age go to kindergartens in the villages Makresh and Rakovitsa. There is 25 people pedagogical staff 17 –university graduated and 8 – collage graduated. Not pedagogical staff consist 18 people. There are no high schools in the municipality.
Health service
Makresh municipality can be an example of successfully implemented health service system. On the territory of the municipality there are registered doctors on general practice as follows: 2 registered medicine practice in which two doctors are hired, four doctor’s assistant and two nurses; 2 dental practices. There are 2 pharmacies in the municipality.

Culture
In villages Makresh and Rakovitsa is concentrated most of the cultural deeds in the municipality. Some of them are amateur theatrical teams, group for old popular tunes and teams for authentic folklore which won many prizes in Veliko Tarnovo, Petrich, Korten and Koprivshtitsa. Near Rakovitsa village is situated well- known monastry “St. Troitsa”. During 1850 an important conclusion was taken for the big rebellion in north- western Bulgaria.

Economy
On the territory of Makresh municipality there are no active industry enterprises. Small and middle companies are regarded to trade and bread produce. There is a small workshop for furniture mould.

Nature facts
On the land of Kiryaevo village – in a place called Kichera – there is a developed limestone quarry – raw material for producing slaked lime and its derivative. Between Makresh village and station Makresh there is a high quality clay field. On the land of Topolovets village there is the only one of its kind lake in Republic Bulgaria.

Ecology
Ecological situation in the municipality is defined from the air condition, water, radiation background and hard public wastes. The dimensions of air pressure show that maximal concentration of harmful substances is under normal rate. The rivers which pass through Makresh municipality have no harmful substences.
The wastes are transported to 7 dung- hills which are 12 000 m².

Tourism
Makresh municipality is ecologically clean region with opportunity to develop hunting and pedestrian tourism. Near monastery “St. Troitsa” is constructed a holiday home (school camp) which can be used as tourist. “Magura” cave and Rabisha lake are tempting objects for tourism.

History
The centre of the municipality – Makresh village builds- up its aspect in the course of centuries. First data about the village are from 15 century. Its name comes from Turkish word “makareshlak” and means confusion and unconquered. The village originates upon old Thracian and Roman villages. East from the village there is a Thracian monument called Drakova hill. On the land called Gradishteto were found relics from small Roman fortress, vessels and coins from Roman time. During 1850 the population of Makresh takes active participation in big north- western rebellion with its centre Belogradchik. People from the municipality take part in rebel’s movement.
