Vidin municipality
The municipality of Vidin is located in the northwestern part of the Danubian Plain. Its territory coincides with the Vidin Lowland, between the bend of the Danube at Vidin and the hills to the southwest. The city of Vidin, at the bank of the Danube, is the municipal capital. Vidin is located in the lowest terrace of the Vidin Lowland, 30 - 35 meters above sea level. The location of the city creates preconditions for international tourism development using rich cultural and historical heritage with which Vidin is popular.








The optimum geographical location of the municipality and good transport access are one of the main strategic priorities and competitive power of the region as a whole. This can be a base for strengthening investment interest.

Nature conditions and recourses
From all nature elements the most sensible influence among the municipality of Vidin has underground and water resources and mineral resources but most poorly are forest resources. Underground resources – Total area of the territory of Vidin municipality is 4 967 291 000 m² and includes:
  • agricultural territories with total are 361 937 000 m²;
  • fund ”Forest territories” – 551 611 000 m²;
  • water flows territory and water areas from 34 507 000 m²;
  • fund ”Populated areas” is 40 780 000 m²;
  • “Infrastructure and transport” – 4 344 000 m²

    Areas under irrigation are 53 620 000m²
    The natural resources are very important for the development of agriculture. Geologically speaking the territory is constructed from alluvial gravel – sandy and sandy – clay deposits. Basically the region soils preserved their structure and fruitfulness.

    Climate
    The climate in the municipality of Vidin is moderate continental. Danube’s waters are very important for the forming of microclimate. West and north- western winds are predominant for the region. Water resources – Underground waters are formed in gravel – sandy horizon and are directly connected with Danube’s waters as their level depends on water construction of the river. River Danube is the main origin as it feeds them during months May and June, while from September to December it drains them.
    In the region of Vidin municipality, the section Vidin – Slanotran – Koshava there is a mineral thermal water with high value of mineral components /iodine, bromine and other/.







    Natural resources
    On the territory of Vidin municipality there is a gypsum field which is the only one mine for extraction and manufacturing in the country. It is situated in Koshava village.

    Population: The population of the municipality is 86 249 citizens with permanent address and 80 050 citizens with present address till 08.02.2005. 60,59 % in active age 48 500 citizens/, 17,20 % not capable of working /13 769 citizens/ and 22,21 % capable of working /17 781 citizens which is about 64 % from the population of Vidin municipality. 80, 87 % from the population of Vidin municipality lives in towns and 19,13 % - in villages.

    Economy
    The municipality of Vidin is main industrial and agricultural centre in region Vidin. The combination of present material base, qualified labour workers, tendencies in production of some products and fruitful land are preconditions for development of local economy.
    During last years the economy of the municipality follows the tendency valid for macro economical level. Leading priority for the municipality is its geographical location which ensures with optimum opportunities for the development of transport services.
    On the territory of the municipality there is a unique mine for gypsum extracting and manufacturing in the village of Koshava and “Knauf – Gipsfazer” PLC is the only producer of gypsum constructing surfaces on the Balkans with 100 % foreign participation.
    According to the statistics GDP per person for 2000-2003, Region Vidin is at second place between regions in north- western region for planning. The produced GDP in the region during 2002 calculated at current prices is 379,341 million lv which is 1, 17% from GDP of the country and 19, 80% from DGP of the north- western region for planning. The municipality has tendencies in manufacturing agricultural production and production of foodstuffs as it has appropriate industry infrastructure. These private companies are: mill “Dunav” PLC- Vidin; “Elby Bulgaricum” PLC – Vidin with science institute (diary produce); “Novoselska gamza” PLC - Vidin (alcoholic produce and wine); “Manolov” LTD - Vidin (meat produce); “Hana” LTD - Dunavtsi (fodder blend production).

    Tourism
    One of the priority tendencies which the development of future municipality of Vidin should follow is tourism. River Danube is a prerequisite for development of water tourism. The beautiful countryside near Vidin has solid landmarks for the development of alternative tourism.
    There is lots of cultural monuments 40-historical, 2-archeological, 68-architectural-constructing and 6 art- architectural.
